Winter 2021 Getaways

 February 21, 2021

Life is pretty much back to normal after the BIG FREEZE in Texas.  Power and water are on again and the temperature outside is comfortable.   We just need to restock our fridge, but know there are shortages in the stores and we are well supplied with food thanks to our extra freezer (being located in an unheated space and having many jugs of ice in there kept the contents from thawing).  Our camping equipment helped us through the event - camp stove and adequate propane, headlamps, warm sleeping bags, gallon size jugs of water we always have on hand.   While we are not "preppers" per se, the past year of less frequent grocery store trips and augmenting our food stores when last spring's scarcities eased up resulted in a well-stocked pantry.  We even have milk and raw scrambled eggs in the freezer.  At this point, a pile of fresh produce will be welcome!   Thankfully, all of our kids' domiciles as well as our own made it through without broken water pipes.

In contrast, spring break is just three weeks away when we will be camping with our kids and grandkids again.   Here is a look back at some of the short getaways we took since Thanksgiving.

There are four national forests in east Texas.  This is one we
haven't spent much time exploring.  It is less developed and located
just west of Toledo Bend Reservoir on the Louisiana border.

An unusual cemetery right in the campground

The next adventure took us to a location closer to home.
One of the trailheads for the Lone Star Hiking Trail is
in this campground.  It felt so good to be out on a trail again.

Stubblefield Recreation Area is not far from the nice town of Montgomery.

We made another visit to the Memorial Garden there in a beautiful summer day.

I think this is the best birdhouse I have ever seen.

My favorite water feature in the park

Tribute to a grandmother at an outdoor reading area.
There is a Little Free Library nearby.

You can's spit in Montgomery without hitting the Lone Star Flag.

The week before the winter storm, we took a four day trip southwest of Houston to

Goliad State Park ...

. . . and Choke Canyon State Park where we saw and heard so many birds.

Passing through the town of George West, we stopped to visit "Geronimo"
